Are you prepared for disaster?
Monday, April 09, 2007

Last week my colleagues from Alticor Corporate Citizenship and I met with two wonderful friends from the American Red Cross. During times of disaster, Alticor, Quixtar and our sister companies, Amway and Access have supported the relief efforts of the Red Cross.

Our meeting last week was to get an update and discuss how we can further support this worthwhile organization. At the meeting we learned about the Red Cross' efforts in teaching people to prepare in advance of a disaster. There are three basic steps we all need to take.

1 - Get a kit together that contains water, food, first aid supplies, medications, a radio, tools, clothing, sanitary supplies, personal items, money, contact information, pet supplies and a map.

2 - Make a plan and share it with your family. Practice your plan. Don't forget to include your pets in your plan.

3 - Be informed. Learn what types of disasters are most likely to impact where you live and work. Learn which local authorities will be available to help and share what you've learned with friends and family.

For those of you who reside in West Michigan, the Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids will be hosting a celebration of community heroes on Friday, May 4th. You won't want to miss this opportunity to honor brave men and women who've selflessly given to help others. For more information on the dinner and tickets visit www.greatergrandrapids.redcross.org
